Sun and Avocado
Sun and Avocado Route
The light of this magical route, rich in history and famous personalities, captures us during our journey through its beautiful villages, long coasts and fertile interior countryside.
From the beaches of Rincón de la Victoria, the entrance to Axarquía, to the subtropical crop fields of Benamargosa, these 75 kilometers invite you to discover the six municipalities along the closest route to Malaga, including the municipalities of Rincón de la Victoria, Macharaviaya, Vélez-Malaga, Benamocarra, Iznate and Benamargosa.
The subtropical fruits, in addition to the magnificent sunshine that you can enjoy along the coast, are the driving force of a route that won't fail to impress you. Mangos, papayas, custard apples and, most importantly, avocados live together in perfect harmony with the traditional crops of Axarquía. This agricultural diversity is due to the exceptional micro-climate created by the mountain ranges of the Sierra Tejeda, Alhama and Almijara Natural Park.
This route is unique because of its historical significance, an aspect which is evident in the city of Vélez-Malaga, capital of Axarquía. The capital manifests its position not only in its history and population, but also in its geographic location, which showcases a splendid fertile plain in a central location from which all of major paths and routes originate, inviting you to discover the variety of special places in Axarquía.
Distinguished personalities have left their mark on the villages along the Sun and Avocado Route. The poet Salvador Rueda, the musician Eduardo Ocón and the philosopher and writer María Zambrano were all born in this region, which was also home to the Gálvez family, authentic patrons of Macharaviaya. The Treasure Cave in Rincón de la Victoria offers important historical heritage, the only marine grotto that can be visited in Europe.
Due to its variety, this route is appropriate for all types of interests, so that if cultural tourism doesn't interest you, you can opt for the extensive beaches or nautical and golf activities, in addition to a wide range of other services, which will let the traveler enjoy a fun and pleasant stay.
